Waiting Children List
This summer we made a big decision that we would open to a special needs child. Our adoption agency has its own list for these children in addition to the shared list. CCAA (China Center of Adoption Affairs) periodically release information for special needs children through the shared list, any agencies join to this program are able to view information for these children.
To my surprise, there are many boys on the waiting children list.

This morning my eyes are captured by this little boy on the shared list for special needs children. I called our agency for his file and we are given 48 hours to make a decision after discussing with DH.
Immediately I email his file to an international adoption doctor for advices. My mind won't be able to concentrate on my job today and I leave for home.
IA doctor calls me in the afternoon. I am told that he needs a long-term care and his development chart shows he is about 2-year-old, though he just had his 4th-birthday this month. I feel so sad and frightened when I heard what IA doctor's comments. My mind starts to picture watching his sufferings and helpless, his span of life will be shorter than a normal people. I am sobbing on the floor and I cry for God's help.
My mind starts to calm down and peace returns to me when I kneel down to pray. My heart begins to count God's blessings to me and my family. His marvelous works in my life overtake the fears I have. And God reminds me who is a life giver and who controls a person's life. I realized it is not about my feelings, it is about giving a needy child a forever home.
I begin to search his needs both in Chinese and English. My heart feels pain again when I read messages posted in Chinese web sites. Most parents with the same medical issue frequently asked a question is how much the cost for a surgery.

I am overwhelmed for the past hours. We can't turn away from this beautiful child, a child with a long scar on his chest and sad looking. He needs a family. Oh, Father, strengthen me!
I attend a prayer meeting tonight. My body is trembling and my voice is changed when we sing a song "Oh, Abba Father". I am filled with God's love and I am assured by His faithfulness to His children and His mighty power.

Both DH and I made the same decision and a letter of intent is sent by our agency today.
Following link is sent by a friend met online. We are very few Chinese from mainland to decide to complete our family through adoption. She is waiting for a healthy girl/twin. Thank you, Starfish, wish you meet your child very soon. This song makes me tears each time when I am listening, though it is in Chinese, feelings are universal.

I googled every corner about our son's Social Welfare Institute and the city he is related. I found some news about his SWI and a list of children who received surgeries in 2008.

２月１６日，记者在社会福利中心采访时了解到，从去年初至现在，福利中心又有１７名患有唇腭裂或先天性心脏病的孤残儿童成功完成了手术康复治疗，其中１４人已被国内家庭寄养，３人已被涉外收养。福利中心主任告诉记者，是区慈善会为这１７名幸运的孩子提供了２１．６万元的全额手术费用，让这些弃婴病童重获新生，拥有了美好的明天。
现在刚刚１岁９个月大的男孩龙海，在２００７年５月出生时，因患先天性双侧完全性腭裂、吮吸和呼吸极度困难被父母遗弃。２００８年７月１８日，龙海在市儿童医院接受了双侧完全性腭裂修复术，术后在福利中心医护人员的精心照顾下，现在恢复得很好。现在龙海不仅进食顺畅，呼吸道功能改善，而且学会了说话，成了寄养家庭中人见人爱的可爱宝贝。
３岁女孩沙妙２００６年３月被送到福利中心时奄奄一息，经诊断是先天性心脏病患儿。这种患儿平素易反复罹患肺炎且生长缓慢，这是小儿心脏病中最常见的，主要是胎儿时期心脏血管发育异常而导致畸形，患儿常在出生后数周或数月夭折。但若能得到准确诊断，并及时手术治疗，大多数可改观或治愈。２００８年２月２７日，沙妙在市儿童医院接受了膜周部修补术，术后恢复良好。
记者每次看到有弃婴（童）被送到福利中心时，总是在揪心，总要为那些有着不幸的孩子在担忧。但是，在看到患儿得到社会各界的救助，手术后获得新生，或被国内外家庭收养，或被寄养，又以普通孩子的身份顺利融入社会时，又不禁感叹，大难之人必有大福。社会福利中心保育部的蒋部长为记者提供了由慈善会捐助的１７个孩子实施的２３例手术的详细清单及手术前后的图片资料。记者看到，现在的唇裂修复手术可谓巧夺天工，手术后的孩子几乎看不出痕迹，做过心脏病手术的孩子可以说与正常孩子没有什么分别。
为了让慈善救助资金产生最好的效益，社会福利中心对所有收养的病患儿童进行了筛查，并选派有特别医护经验的工作人员专门负责此项工作。最后确定龙海、沙妙、观益、富贵、松飞、公修等１７名具有手术适应症的孤残儿童参加手术治疗。从２００８年初至今，整整一年，经过医护人员的精心救治和护理，２３例唇裂修复及先天性心脏手术全部获得圆满成功。术后，１７名孩子不同程度地恢复和矫正了外观畸形或功能障碍，为其更好地融入社会做好了必要的准备。现在，这批幸运的孩子中，观益、公修、龙姿已分别被美国和瑞士的涉外家庭收养，其余１４个孩子现在分别寄养在普通人家庭当中，福利中心的工作人员会定期回访探望。

The correspondent reported when visiting SWI that another 17 abandoned children have received surgeries successfully for congenital heart defects and cleft clip/palate from early last year till now and all are doing well. Among them, 14 have been placed to care homes in the country, and 3 have been adopted through international adoption agencies. The director said that 216K RMB for surgical cost funded through the district welfare foundation, which helped these children obtain new lives.
A boy, now 21 months, born in 2007 with both sides of cleft palates in severe breathing difficulty, was abandoned by his parents. He is recovered very well under the good care of doctors and nurses during and after surgery. He is able to eat without any difficulties and his breathing condition has been improved, and he also can talk now. He becomes a lovely baby at his new care home.
A 3 years old girl was dying when she was sent to SWI, and she was diagnosed with heart defects. She was given a heart repair surgery in 2008 and recovered in a good shape.
The correspondent always felt pain and worry for those children whenever seeing them abandoned and sent to SWI. However, nowadays it is glad to see many people in the society are willing to give help to these children either by adopting or foster caring them as a normal child after surgeries. The SWI showed detailed lists and photos for these 17 children with 23 surgeries to the reporter. It is amazing to notice in comparing with photos before and after, that for children with cleft clip/palate, it is hardly to see any defect; for those with heart defects, they look almost like a normal child.
SWI chose these 17 children to be given surgeries among all special needs children they have at SWI after careful evaluation in order to utilize the fund they received. Among the 17, 3 have been adopted by American and Swedish. The remaining 14 have been placed to foster care homes at normal families nearby and workers at SWI will visit them periodically. Shanghai, China
China to me now is really new, new highways, new shopping malls, newly formed cities, new city halls look like a little white house everywhere and etc. China has been changed a great deal in the past 2 decades. Chinese are richer than 30 years ago in many ways including colorful clothes, plenty of foods and allow to own personal properties like houses and cars, traveling with a high speed train and so on.
Shanghai people, or Shanghainese are more proud of themselves. I remember my brother said when he visited the US, "Only Manhattan can be compared with Shanghai now", that's 10 years ago. However, my co-worker went to China this April to attend her brother's wedding in China. Her brother couldn't find a job here and left America for China's adventure 3 years ago. He is an English teacher now in a small city at northern China, about 500 miles north of Beijing. He is an American guy and married a Chinese girl. My co-worker said in her opinion that China is behind the US for 50 years when she returned. That's her conclusion for her 2 weeks' visit at a small city. She got no chances to see Beijing, Shanghai or other cities.
It seems I shouldn't talk about this topic in this blog, but I feel our son soon will connect with our family's past, present and future. Recall when we decided to buy a house in Shanghai in 2003 as an investment and other purpose. I said to myself we were not interested in these things when the developer showed us designed layout for a duplex house and subdivision, which included a room for a child and children's play ground. Today I feel so amazing that the house we bought 6 years ago (completed in 2005) may become a place for our child/children grow up.

January 2008 Zhou Zhuang
We visited Zhou Zhuang, the Venice of China in Jan. 08. It was quiet, not so many tourists because of winter. Zhou Zhuang locates 47 miles west of Shanghai and is famous for its well known ancient towns, stone bridges, water ways and old residency houses.
It took us about 90 minutes from Shanghai to Zhou Zhuang by a tourism bus. We rode a boat for about 20 minutes on the water. The boatlady sang several folk songs for us.

Another Spring
This spring we made some changes towards our exterior house. 2 juniper trees have grown crazily in the front of our house recent years. I have asked husband cut them down because they blocked the view of our house, but he found many reasons to keep them. Maybe it is a hard job for him.
Amazingly, one day when I walked outside and saw juniper trees were bended and damaged by last night's high wind. This time DH won't have any excuse and has to clear the mess. DH spent 2 days to cut branches to pieces by electrical saw so that we are able to load them into our truck and dump to the waste yard at nearby farm.
My house once again shows her nice looking after these 2 trees gone. In April, DH and I were discussing to replace our roof with high quality material. We have found several pieces of shingles fall down from the roof, though our house is only 14 years old.
We have our roof quoted and it is not cheap for a life time warranty and top quality material. I hesitate to spend so much money on it. DH would like to go for it, in addition to have exterior wood frame painted this year.
One day, DH hugged me as usual when he got home and whispered me, "Guess what?" "What? " I replied. "One company wants me do a proposal for them and guess what? The price they offered me is almost the same we paid for our roof." Wow, God must know my heart. Thank you, my Lord!
